Vacation Day 11 – New Stanton, PA to Albany, NY

Dallas| August 19, 2008 7:08 pm

We’ve been really busy since arriving in Quebec…  I haven’t had a chance to post any entries on here!

Day 11 was an interesting day for us…  We decided to put our new GPS to the ultimate test and take it for a ride right into the heart of New York City… Manhattan Island.  We’ve never been there before, so this was an amazing experience for both of us.  We set our destination as the Staten Island Ferry terminal at the south end of Manhattan, and let the GPS guide us there.  We had a couple small mixups due to myself missing a turn here and there, but the GPS was always quick to recalculate our route and get us right back on track.  We wasted little time getting to the south end of Manhattan…  Traffic was surprisingly light this Tuesday afternoon.

After arriving at our destination, we drove around looking for a place to park, and finally found one where you give them the keys and let them do all the work… The price was $27 per hour… and was in line with the other places we saw downtown…  VERY expensive!

We then walked about 6 blocks to the Staten Island Ferry terminal.  The Staten Island Ferry is a free ferry that runs very frequent (about every 15 minutes) and very cheap (free!) from the south end of Manhattan to Staten Island.  As it pulls away from the dock, you get a great view of Manhattan…  and then during the trip it passes nearby Liberty Island which is the location of the Statue of Liberty.  We snapped several pictures of the city and the statue, and then enjoyed the rest of the trip.

Upon arriving at Staten Island, we quickly moved through the terminal back to the boarding area, and hopped on the next ferry back to Manhattan Island without even waiting.  We rode the ferry back, and snapped a picture of one of the other ferries as we cruised by.

Once back at the dock, we returned to the building we parked at, and took a great picture of Wall Street along the way.

We then instructed the GPS to take us to Albany, New York, and quickly left Manhattan behind, again with very little traffic for 5:30 PM!

Vacation Day 10 – Cincinnati, OH to New Stanton, PA

Dallas| August 18, 2008 9:52 pm

We started Monday with a trip to SportTour in Cincinnati to pick up some luggage for my bike, and then spent the rest of the day traveling.

We entered Pensylvania in the early afternoon…  I was amazed at the drivers here…  At every ramp onto the interstate, we found people stopped, waiting for a large break in the traffic to get onto the interstate.  People in PA do NOT know how to merge!  They come up the ramps at 30 mph, onto a freeway where the traffic is flying along at 65+ mph, and then slam on their brakes, coming to a complete stop…

Then, to make matters worse, we ended up staying in the worst hotel of the trip…  A Days Inn at New Stanton, PA…  The room was dirty, the floors were sticky, the towels were dirty, and there was mold on the shower curtain…  The free “Hot Breakfast with Sausage and Eggs” turned out to be cold sausage and egg patties… and a microwave.  The parking lot was a mess…  It looked like the back alley behind a night club, if you can imagine what that means.  Anyways, after this experience, we won’t be staying at this “4 star” AAA approved Days Inn ever again… and probably not at ANY Days Inn for that matter.

Vacation Day 9 – St. Louis, MO to Cincinnati, OH

Dallas| August 17, 2008 9:25 pm

We only had one goal for Day 9, and that was to make it to Columbus, OH by 5 pm.  a couple days earlier, I bought a GPS (TomTom Go 930 for those interested) at Best Buy, and was putting it through it’s paces…  It was working great until we had about 2 hours left to Columbus, and then it completely crashed…  Turns out the TomTom is very sensitive to being removed from it’s PC cradle, and the map data can get corrupted if you do this…  So we stopped at a rest stop and restored a previous backup, and we were back on our way.

We arrived at Eddie George’s Grill in Columbus just before 5, right on time…  and met with several friends from our EQ2 guild CLAW…  In the picture, from left to right, you will find LucianClaw (Brian), Vestanpance (Dan), Myself (Moshek), Letycia (Chantale!), Azri (Sara) and Searril (Brian)…  We had a great meal at Eddie George’s, and then Vesty led us on a tour of part of the nearby campus (Where he works!).

After supper, we decided to move on to Cincinatti, so that we could sleep in the next morning before visiting SportTour to pick up some motorcycle luggage!

Vacation Day 8 – Tulsa, OK to St. Louis, MO

stlouisarch

Day 8 left us in St. Louis, so of course we had to go see the St. Louis Arch…  I was amazed at how large it was, and I didn’t know it was made of metal…  Not to mention that there is a huge complex below it, including a museum, theatre, and tram rides to the top of the arch!

Vacation Day 7 – Albuquerque, NM to Tulsa, OK

Dallas| August 15, 2008 10:50 pm

Another travel day, with nothing much to report…  We did stop for lunch at McDonald’s in Amarillo, TX, and then for some Dairy Queen… And we were not impressed… Both places were extremely dirty and messy…  The bathrooms were disgusting, and the workers were pretty useless…  Not impressed at all.

I also found the road system connecting to the interstate to be extremely annoying…  The connecting expressway had access to every single tiny little store along the way, making the traffic extremely slow…  And then when you try to get up on the interstate, they don’t even give you an acceleration lane… You basically have to fly up as fast as you can, hope like hell nobody is in the rightmost lane, and just go for it!  Can’t say I’ll ever go to Amarillo again.

We did end up staying in a very nice Days Inn at Tulsa…  They didn’t even have a coupon, and the room was only $55… I would highly recommend it!

Vacation Day 6 – Flagstaff, AZ to Albuquerque, NM

Dallas| August 14, 2008 11:06 pm
petrifiedforest

Day 6 ended up being mostly a travel day, with a brief stop in Holbrook, Arizona to visit the museum, and then a drive through the Petrified Forest nearby.  The trip through the “forest” took about an hour, and wasn’t nearly as “exciting” as we had hoped…  We did get to see a bunch of petrified wood…  And some nice views, but after leaving the Grand Canyon it really didn’t compare!

We ended up driving the rest of the day, and stopped in albuquerque, NM for the night.
